Los Muertos Bailan Organizers Open Up Chalk Art Competition to Professional Artists Too

Edinburg, TX - The City of Edinburg Cultural Arts Department invites artists to participate in the Los Muertos Bailan Chalk Art Competition on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as part of the City’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration.

Although this year's competition was originally open to high school students, Edinburg Cultural Arts has now reopened it to professional artists as well. The event features two divisions: High School Artist and Professional Artist. Participants will create original chalk artwork inspired by the themes and traditions of Los Muertos Bailan and Día de los Muertos. All participating artists must bring their own supplies.

Registration is free, but participants must compete individually and complete their artwork without assistance. The High School Artist Division is limited to 20 participants, each provided with a 3'6' art space, while the Professional Artist Division is limited to 10 participants, each provided a 4'8' art space. First, second, and third-place winners in both divisions will receive trophies. The first-place winner in each division will also have their design featured on the 2027 Chalk Art Poster and reproduced as postcards to be sold at the ACE Gift Shop.

Additionally, the High School Artist Division first-place winner will have their design produced as a large-format poster and displayed at the ACE Center for one year. The Professional Artist Division first-place winner will have their design produced as a banner displayed at the Promenade Park Amphitheater for one year, featured on the amphitheater screen, and will receive a $200 stipend to lead a four-hour chalk art workshop at the ACE Center.
