Crime Prevention

The Edinburg Police Department is dedicated to protecting, serving, and defending the citizens in our community. In an effort to better serve the community, we have provided information and programs organized by our C.O.P.S. Division that can be useful in crime prevention.

The safety of the community is our number one priority.  We have added this Safety Tips section to provide information that we hope will be of use throughout the year for everyone. Please take the time to browse the information as it may help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime or accident.

  1. Lock your vehicle and remove all valuable property from it whenever your vehicle is going to be left unattended for any period of time.
  2. Never respond to an unsolicited phone call or email requesting personal or financial information until you have confirmed the requesting party is legitimate.
  3. Never give out any of your personal or financial information to a solicitor and avoid giving money unless you are familiar with the solicitor or can confirm the validity of the business or organization they are representing.
  4. We encourage the public to use extra safety measures like steering wheel locks or car alarms for prevention of auto theft.
  5. Ask for an 'extra patrol' of your neighborhood from the Edinburg Police department when you're out of town. Ask a trusted friend to watch your home so it never shows signs of vacancy.
  6. Stay alert and active in your neighborhood. Call the non-emergency line for anything suspicious. If you see something, say something.
  7. Do not drive distracted or intoxicated. If you choose to drink alcohol, get a safe ride home.
  8. Slow down in the school zones. Edinburg traffic officers are highly vigilant and alert, keeping our kids safe.
  9. Keep your homes well lit and if possible, use surveillance.
  10. Call the Edinburg Police department to sign up for one of our watch programs- Neighborhood watch, Business watch, Dog Walker Watch.

Safety Tips Articles

Take steps to protect yourself from identity theft:

  • Secure your Social Security number (SSN). Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet or write your number on your checks. Only give out your SSN when absolutely necessary.
  • Don’t respond to unsolicited requests for personal information (your name, birthdate, Social Security number, or bank account number) by phone, mail, or online.
  • Contact the three credit reporting agencies to request a freeze of your credit reports.
  • Collect mail promptly. Place a hold on your mail when you are away from home for several days.
  • Pay attention to your billing cycles. If bills or financial statements are late, contact the sender.
  • Enable the security features on mobile devices, especially if you have contacts, banking websites and applications saved.
  • Update sharing and firewall settings when you're on a public wi-fi network. Consider using a virtual private network, which can give you the privacy of secured private network.
  • Review your credit card and bank account statements. Promptly compare receipts with account statements. Watch for unauthorized transactions.
  • Shred receipts, credit offers, account statements, and expired credit cards, to prevent “dumpster divers” from getting your personal information.
  • Store personal information in a safe place.
  • Install firewalls and virus-detection software on your home computer.
  • Create complex passwords that identity thieves cannot guess easily. Change your passwords if a company that you do business with has a breach of its databases
  • Review your credit report once a year to be certain that it doesn't include accounts that you have not opened.

Often burglaries are committed by individuals who take advantage of easy targets. Don't make it easy for them.

  1. Install a deadbolt lock: Deadbolts are usually locked with a key from the outside and a thumb turn on the inside. The cylinder should be pick resistant. Lock your doors every time you leave the house, even if you're leaving for just a few minutes during the day. The most popular times for residential burglaries are weekday daylight hours.
  2. Install solid doors: Outside doors should be metal or solid hardwood and at least 1 3/4 inches thick. Frames must be made of equally strong material and each door must fit its frame securely. It is also recommended that residents replace the smaller (usually 1”) screws on the lock’s strike plate with longer screws that attach to the more solid interior door frame in the wall (versus simply screwing into the trim around the door.)
  3. Keep garage doors closed and locked: In order to increase garage security and house security, residents should always lock the doors connecting a home to an attached garage. Leaving the garage door open allows strangers to see whatever belongings are stored in the garage.
  4. Secure sliding doors and windows: You can secure them by putting a broomstick or dowel in the inside track to jam the door or by installing commercially available locks. To prevent the door being lifted off of the track, drill a hole through the sliding door frame and the fixed frame. Then insert a pin in the hole
  5. Secure sash windows: To prevent wooden sash windows from being pried open, drill a downward sloping hole into the top of the bottom window through and into the bottom of the top window and insert a pin or nail. To prevent aluminum sash windows from being broken into, purchase a track lock that blocks the window track.
  6. Mark your property: Mark your valuables with an engraver. Marking your property serves as a deterrent to would-be burglars and it helps police in identifying and returning stolen property. Make a property identification list.
  7. Alarms: A home alarm system can be a very effective burglary deterrent and fit into many people's needs. Remember to test your system monthly.
  8. Leave a light on: When leaving on trips, leave a light on in the bathroom. In the bedroom, attach a lamp and radio to a 24-hour electric timer set to go on at dusk and off at your bedtime. Close bedroom drapes or blinds.
  9. Use a proper exterior lighting: Security lights at the corner of the home are also great deterrents. Burglars hate bright lights. Install outside lights and keep them on at night. Motion-detector lights can be particularly effective.
  10. Work together with your neighbors: When you are going to be away, tell trusted neighbors and ask them to watch your property. Have neighbors maintain your yard. When on vacation, have someone cut grass. Shrubbery should not hide neighbors' view of windows or doors. Have someone pick up newspapers and mail. Tell neighbors to call police if they notice anything suspicious.
  11. Maintain a current list of the serial numbers from your property: Write down the serial numbers from valuables throughout your house. Keep copies of the list in multiple areas so at least one will be accessible. DON’T keep the only list on items such as computers or laptops as those items are frequently stolen by thieves. Doing this simple thing dramatically increases the chances that your property is recovered if it is ever stolen.
