Overview of Aviation
The Department of Aviation operates and maintains South Texas International Airport at Edinburg (EBG / KEBG), located on 1,080 acres along I-69C/US 281 at the northern edge of the city. For more than 80 years the airport has supported a wide range of aviation activities including general aviation, law enforcement, military, medevac, flight training, commercial charter operations, and international arrivals and departures with on-site U.S. Customs.
While many Edinburg residents may be unaware of their own local airport, its growth, capabilities, and contributions to the community are becoming more apparent. Aircraft at EBG range from single-engine trainers and commuter planes to medium-lift helicopters and large business jets such as the Gulfstream IV.
As the City of Edinburg grows, so does its airport. 2026-2027, Runway 14-32 will be extended from 5,000 to 6,000 feet, enabling accommodation of even larger aircraft that previously relied on neighboring airfields.
