Texas Glo Awards $1 Million Flood Mitigation Grant to Edinburg

EDINBURG, TX – The City of Edinburg is pleased to announce that is has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Texas General Land Office (GLO) to help the City further recover from the 2018 South Texas floods. The grant will be used for drainage improvements in the northwest side of the City.
The Chapin Pumps Rehabilitation Drainage Improvements Project involves the design and installation of new pumps, and rehabilitation of the existing pump station and gates. The project will mitigate flooding within the service area by discharging floodwaters to nearby Chapin Pond. Chapin Pond is a detention pond that serves approximately 670 acres of residential, commercial, higher education areas and underdeveloped land. It is vital in providing flood critical detention services to the west side of Edinburg.
“We are thrilled to receive this state grant, which will help us to enhance our progress on flood mitigation in our community,” Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to improve the infrastructure and fortify our city against future flooding.”
The City of Edinburg was among 13 Rio Grande Valley cities that received disaster recovery funds in the amount of $12,510,997 for federally eligible infrastructure projects.
The engineering design will take six to eight months once the official award is issued and construction on the project is projected by early 2024. The City of Edinburg would like to thank the GLO for their support and partnership in this important initiative.
