El Sal Del Rey

This large salt lake, located 22 miles north of Edinburg, was discovered by the Spanish Conquistadors. Salt from its mines was transported overseas to Spain and other colonies in Mexico. You can see the white banks from Highway 186, where a historical marker is located. El Sal Del Rey is open from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. Southern Pacific Train

You can tour the historic Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, which was built in 1927 and is home to the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Center. Come and view the Rio Grande Valley Exhibit of Southern Pacific memorabilia that features a conductor’s cap, playing cards, lamps, lanterns, as well as the original “golden spike” that was driven on January 11, 1927. The Depot is located at 602 W. University Drive and is open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. You can visit www.edinburg.com for more information.


Hidalgo County Veterans War Memorial

The Hidalgo County Veterans War Memorial, located on the lawn of the Hidalgo County Courthouse, honors individuals from Hidalgo County whom were killed in action during World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Hidalgo County is also home to three heroes awarded the Distinguish Medal of Honor.
